How the Powerball payout works

The advertised Powerball jackpot is the annuity: one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments, each 5% larger than the one before. The cash value, $183.1 Million for this drawing (41.6% of the jackpot), is the money in the prize pool, paid at once if the winner chooses the lump sum. Both figures are before taxes.

The jackpot odds per play are 1 in 292,201,338. Compare every prize tier and ticket expected value in Powerball odds and prize probabilities. If your ticket has won, follow the lottery winner claim checklist before deciding how to receive the money.

Since July 21, 2026, Powerball tickets are also sold in the United Kingdom. A U.S. winner's prize is calculated the same way, but if the jackpot is won in both countries it is split by cash value among all winning tickets, so enter the total number of winning tickets under “More options”.

Taxes on Powerball winnings

The Powerball jackpot calculator above starts with the current jackpot and its cash value, then subtracts federal and state income tax for the state you pick, plus city tax in New York City and Yonkers. Why the 24% withheld at claim is not the final bill is explained in taxes on lottery winnings.

At the current jackpot, a single winner in Texas who takes the cash would owe about $67,697,000 in federal income tax and take home about $115,403,000. The same winner living in New York City would also owe New York State and city tax, taking home about $88,563,555. See every state in the lottery tax by state table, or compare payment options with the Powerball annuity calculator.

Powerball payout by state

For the current $440 Million jackpot ($183.1 Million cash), a single winner keeps the most — about $115,403,000 from the lump sum — in the states with no tax on lottery prizes: California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. The least is in New York City, about $88,563,555. This table is recalculated every day as the Powerball jackpot changes.

Single filer living in the state, no other income, 2026 federal and state rates. Federal tax on the Powerball cash value is the same everywhere: about $67,697,000. Maryland includes the average county income tax; other county and city taxes outside New York City are not included. Choose your state and filing status in the Powerball calculator above, or compare rates in lottery tax by state.

Powerball prizes after taxes

Every Powerball prize below the jackpot is a set cash amount. Power Play multiplies those prizes: for this drawing the multiplier can be 2X to 5X, since the 10X multiplier is only in play when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less. Match 5 with Power Play always pays $2,000,000 (Powerball prize chart). Only the $50,000 and $1,000,000 prizes are large enough for federal withholding: on the $1,000,000 prize the lottery withholds about $240,000, and the final federal tax is about $337,180.
