How the Mega Millions payout works

The advertised Mega Millions jackpot is the annuity: one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments, each 5% larger than the one before. The cash value, $131.1 Million for this drawing (40.8% of the jackpot), is the money in the prize pool, paid at once if the winner chooses the lump sum. Both figures are before taxes.

The jackpot odds per play are 1 in 290,472,336. Compare every prize tier and ticket expected value in Mega Millions odds and prize probabilities. If your ticket has won, follow the lottery winner claim checklist before deciding how to receive the money.

Mega Millions tickets cost $5 per play with a multiplier included. Because federal withholding is figured on the winnings minus the amount wagered, the ticket price is subtracted before the 24% is applied.

Taxes on Mega Millions winnings

The Mega Millions jackpot calculator above starts with the current jackpot and its cash value, then subtracts federal and state income tax for the state you pick, plus city tax in New York City and Yonkers. Why the 24% withheld at claim is not the final bill is explained in taxes on lottery winnings.

At the current jackpot, a single winner in Texas who takes the cash would owe about $48,457,000 in federal income tax and take home about $82,643,000. The same winner living in New York City would also owe New York State and city tax, taking home about $63,487,075. See every state in the lottery tax by state table, or compare payment options with the Mega Millions annuity calculator.

Mega Millions payout by state

The least is in New York City, about $63,487,075. This table is recalculated every day as the Mega Millions jackpot changes.

Single filer living in the state, no other income, 2026 federal and state rates. Federal tax on the Mega Millions cash value is the same everywhere: about $48,457,000. Maryland includes the average county income tax; other county and city taxes outside New York City are not included. Choose your state and filing status in the Mega Millions calculator above, or compare rates in lottery tax by state.

Mega Millions prizes after taxes

Every $5 Mega Millions play comes with a multiplier — 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, 10X — assigned at random when the ticket is bought and applied to every prize except the jackpot. The odds of 2X are 1 in 2.13 and of 10X 1 in 32 (Mega Millions prizes and odds). So the second prize is never less than $2,000,000: a winner with 2X keeps about $1,292,820 after federal tax, and one with 10X wins $10,000,000 and keeps about $6,332,820.

Take-home after 2026 federal income tax for a single filer who already earns $60,000 a year and lives in a state with no tax on lottery prizes. Your own figure: enter the prize in the lottery tax calculator. Federal tax is withheld only from prizes over $5,000 after the $5 ticket price is subtracted. In California, prizes below the jackpot are pari-mutuel and differ from these amounts.

Common questions

How much would the Mega Millions jackpot winner take home?

With the jackpot at $321 Million and a cash value of $131.1 Million, a single winner taking the lump sum keeps about $82,643,000 after federal tax in a state with no income tax, or about $63,487,075 in New York City. Pick your state in the Mega Millions calculator above for your own figure.

How are Mega Millions annuity payments made?

As 30 payments over 29 years: one when you claim, then one a year, each 5% larger than the last. For the current $321 Million jackpot that means $4,831,511 at first, rising to $19,887,153, with each payment taxed in the year it arrives.

How much is withheld when you claim a Mega Millions jackpot?

The lottery withholds 24% for federal tax from the prize minus the $5 ticket price, plus state tax in most states. For the current cash value that is $31,463,999 federal, but the final federal bill at the 37% bracket is about $48,457,000.

How much is the Mega Millions second prize after taxes?

It depends on the multiplier printed on the ticket: $2,000,000 at 2X up to $10,000,000 at 10X. At 2X the lottery withholds about $479,999 when you claim, and a single filer already earning $60,000 would owe about $707,180 in federal tax in total, keeping about $1,292,820 before state tax.
